COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
VALVE, AIR VENTING, STEAM, THERMOSTATIC
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description by all federal agencies.
1. SCOPE
1.1 Scope. This commercial item description covers a thermostatically operated, non-adjustable vent valve, intended to be mounted on an individual radiator to automatically free the steam heating system of air.
2. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
2.1 Rating. At the normal fixed vent setting, the valve shall maintain a radiator with at least 100 square feet (9.3 m2) of rated surface within 3oF (-16oC) of inlet steam temperature, except the last radiator section, which shall be within 20oF (-7oC).
2.2 Temperature equilibrium. Equilibrium shall be attained within 50 minutes when supplied with steam at 1/2 psi (3.4 kPa).
2.3 Pressure. The valve shall be designed for 15 psi (103 kPa) maximum steam pressure.
2.4 Pattern. The valve pattern shall be an angle configuration.
2.5 Material/finish. The valve body and base shall be brass, with the exterior chrome or nickel plated.
2.6 Mounting. The valve shall be capable of being mounted on individual steam radiators by 1/8 American Standard taper pipe thread connection.
2.7 Workmanship. The valve shall have no defect that affects function, appearance or serviceability.
